"It’s an exciting time to be an online casino player in Alberta. The legal landscape is evolving quickly, with Bill 48 passing in May. This provides a framework for how Alberta will authorize and regulate online casinos. The final step, royal enactment is expected soon. If enacted, Bill 48 would allow commercial wagering to go live by Q2 2026. Learn more about legal gambling in Alberta on this page, including why we recommend international casinos over PlayAlberta."

Jackpot City Casino - best overall experience

Pros
✅ Voted winner of Casino.org's 'Best Casino of the Year' 2023
✅ 20+ live casino game varieties, more than most casinos
✅ More daily promotions (seven per week) than most CA casinos
Cons
❌ Smaller games lobby (800+ titles) than other sites on our shortlist
JackpotCity Casino is perfect for seasoned players and Albertans new to gambling online. With 800 games, it's smaller than most. But, if you feel adventurous, there's an above-average number of live dealer titles and progressive jackpot slots. You can make the most of familiar payment providers like Interac, Visa, or Neteller. Expect payouts within 72 hours, regular promotions, and an exclusive Casino.org welcome bonus of up to $4,000 to get you started.
💬 User review: "Thank you for a fair and fun experience. I appreciate the good customer service and the payout process was decent. I look forward to playing again.'" - Nicole, Canada - Trustpilot review, June 08, 2025
💡 Editor's insight: As one of the longest-running online casinos in AB, JackpotCity actually predates Trustpilot. The casino launched in 1998, whilst the review site started in 2007. JackpotCity Casino doesn’t have many Trustpilot comments. Instead, I recommend this site from personal experience. In over two decades, I’ve never experienced a problem.

Tooniebet - best for sports and casino games

Pros
✅ Over 3,300 games to choose from, more than Jackpot City
✅ Lower wagering requirements (20x) than most casinos
✅ A respected brand with multiple licenses
Cons
❌ No no-deposit bonus currently available
Having launched in 2024 in Ontario, Tooniebet now accepts players from Alberta and the rest of Canada too. This is great news if you're looking for a polished site with a wealth of gambling opportunities. In addition to offering 3,000+ slot games, the site offers over 150 live games. You can also place sports bets through the same platform. For me personally, Tooniebet stands out as the wagering requirements are set at 20x. Most casinos come with 35 or 40x requirements, which means you're in with a better chance of redeeming bonus funds at Tooniebet.
💬 User reviews: "I’ve tried many casinos, but this one has the most entertaining slots and rewarding bonus offers. I always find new games to enjoy." - Aiden B, Canada - Trustpilot review, June 16, 2025
💡 Editor’s insight: For players in Alberta, Tooniebet operates under a Tobique Gaming Commission licence, which is valid across Canada (excluding Ontario). While the mix of provinces might seem odd, it’s fully above board. Tooniebet is also licensed by iGO in Ontario, one of Canada’s toughest regulators. This adds an extra layer of trust for players everywhere.

The latest on legal gambling in Alberta
Alberta is in the process of regulating and expanding the online gambling market. The province currently has only one regulated online casino, PlayAlberta, but this is likely to change soon. The Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) is responsible for regulation in the province. Below you can learn more about how and when the market may evolve, plus everything you need to know about gambling laws in AB.A timeline of recent gambling law updates
What's changed recently and how does it affect you?
- The bill passed without amendments
- It now must be approved by Royal Assent before enactment

- Critics argue PGRN is more vital than ever given the move towards regulation

- More time is needed to refine the regulatory regime
- Updates will be provided during 2025

What to expect from a regulated online gambling market

Alberta is expected to regulate online casinos soon. It's rumoured that Alberta will closely follow the regulatory framework of Ontario, but nothing has been confirmed yet from a legislative perspective. If Alberta does follow the Ontario model, then I expect that there will be plenty of casinos to choose from. As with any newly regulated market, I also expect plenty of additional protections will be introduced to safeguard players. One key point to watch out for will be whether Alberta follows Ontario in restricting the advertising of bonuses. In case they do, my advice is to check out bonuses available on this page while you can.
What we know so far
Most online casinos in Alberta currently operate in a 'grey area'. They are managed offshore, so needn't be regulated by the AGLC. They must be licenced elsewhere, however. This is set to change should the market open up. Here's what you can expect:- AGLC will not be the regulator - As the AGLC runs PlayAlberta, it will not remain the regulator for gaming in Alberta. Instead, the Justice Minister will assume responsibility.
- The same brands you know and love - If and when the market opens up, you should still be able to play at the same online casinos. Most large casino operators are already sorting out their paperwork, ready to go when the province is. The only difference will be that they will require a new Alberta licence.
- Responsible gambling policies - Expect a province-wide responsible gambling policy and a self-exclusion tool. Player safety is a top priority, and the new regulator will manage this.
Who can play at online casinos in Alberta? - Key laws and facts
Before you start playing casino games in Alberta, consider the following important laws and requirements.- Legal gambling age
You must be 18 or older to gamble in Alberta. This is different to most Canadian provinces, where the legal gambling age is 19. The age limit applies to both local and online casinos.
- Location restrictions
As the best Alberta casinos aren't required to register with the AGLC, you don't need to be within the province borders to play. If you're traveling outside of Alberta, you can still access and play at the sites listed on this page. Local laws may apply, however. If you visit friends in Ontario, for instance, the casino may be restricted.
- Proof of identity
Most of the time, you will not be asked for ID to join an online casino in AB. However, to withdraw, you may need to submit proof of identity and address. This is to stop money laundering. Accepted ID documents include a driver's license, a Canadian Citizenship Card, or a passport. You can prove your address with a utility bill.
- Taxes on casino winnings
Gambling winnings are not taxable in Alberta nor the rest of Canada. The only exceptions to this rule are if you are deemed a professional player, making the majority of your income through gambling.
- Land-based casinos
Alberta is home to 24 land-based casinos. Six of these are First Nation casinos, located on reserve land. The province also has four racing entertainment centres (RECs). View our list of the best land-based Alberta casinos.
- History of casinos in Alberta
1980 - Cash Casino, Alberta's first land-based casino opens in Calgary | 1995 - The AGLC is formed to oversee gambling, liquor, and cannabis usage | 2020 - PlayAlberta launches as the first regulated online casino
How we review the best casinos in Alberta
Finding the right online casino in Alberta is simpler than it seems. Our experts evaluate every site we recommend using comprehensive and transparent criteria. 30 years in the making, our online casino test is rigorous, fair, and effective. Below is a snapshot of how we rate the best casinos in Alberta.Licenses and reputation
First, our experts ensure all recommended casinos in Alberta hold trusted licenses. Since the AGLC regulates only PlayAlberta, we also consider other respected authorities. Both JackpotCity and Spin Palace are licensed by the Kahnawake Gaming Commission and certified by eCOGRA. JackpotCity also holds AGCO and UKGC licenses, demonstrating their commitment to safe and responsible gaming.
💡 Expert insight: We take licensing seriously when recommending offshore casinos in Alberta. Casinos licensed by strict regulators like the AGCO, UKGC, or MGA score higher than those with a Curaçao licence.
Bonuses and promotions
All of our top five sites offer a welcome bonus to new players and have realistic wagering requirements of 40x or lower. LuckyWins offers the biggest casino welcome bonuses, worth up to $8,000, while SG Casino and Spinbara have the lowest. We factor the amount in, along with how fair the terms and conditions are.
💡 Expert insight: LuckyWins lost points here as their wagering requirements are set at 40x. Whilst this isn't unreasonable, our other top casinos have wagering requirements of 30-35x. Every little helps!
Range of games
We only recommend sites that offer over 400 games from a range of industry-leading providers. Bass Bet takes the lead here with more than 9,000 titles - surpassing 90% of our top casinos. RoboCat and Spinbara also stand out by offering games from over 70 software providers, including the likes of Pragmatic Play, Playtech, and Relax Gaming.
💡 Expert insight: Spin Casino lost points in this round. Although the site offers 700+ games, it relies on Games Global, Evolution Gaming, and Ezugi to stock its lobby. This means players miss out on many top titles, such as Tombstone R.I.P and Money Train 4.
Convenient payment methods
LuckyWins stands out in this round with 18 payment methods, exceeding our minimum requirement of eight. Particularly interesting is the availability of local options such as Interac. SG Casino also offers instant crypto-currency deposits and withdrawals. Accessibility is key, with the top five sites on our toplist allowing deposits from as little as $10.
💡 Expert insight: Alberta casinos offer trusted local options like Interac alongside cards, e-wallets, and crypto, ensuring fast, flexible, and low-minimum payments.
Mobile and app experience
Our recommended casinos must launch on mobile within seconds, rarely crash, and have high-quality graphics across different screen sizes. Whilst an app isn't necessary, just a good mobile casino site, Spin Casino excels here. Available on both iOS and Android, it's easy to navigate and highly rated by players. JackpotCity Casino also scores points, offering an above average number of live dealer games on mobile.

Once you're sure that you're playing at a top Alberta casino online - you'll want to know what casino games you can play! The good news is that there are plenty of choices for players from AB. Let's take a look at the most popular games.
Online slots
Discover the best slots and slots sitesOnline slots are the most common and popular casino games in Alberta. Some of the most popular slots include Wolf Gold and Big Bass Bonanza by Pragmatic Play, as tracked by PlayOJO casino. At Lucky Ones, on the other hand, top games include Gates of Olympus (Pragmatic Play) and Super Golden Dragon Inferno (Betsoft). This shows that Albertans enjoy a diverse range of slots!
Big Bass Bonanza is a medium volatility game with a generous return to player rate (RTP) of 96.71%. Book of Shadows, in contrast, offers a slightly lower RTP of 96.50% and high volatility. It does, however, offer maximum wins of 5,000 x your bet. One thing's for sure, Alberta slots players love free spins as both slots offer them via bonus features.
💡 Editor's tip: Check which software providers are available at a casino before registering. There's nothing more frustrating than creating an account and finding out your favourite slot isn't available. Popular AB software providers include Pragmatic Play, Play'n GO, Nolimit City, and Relax Gaming.
⚖️ House edge: From 2% to 6%
Blackjack
Find great online blackjack casinosAs blackjack has a very low house edge it's always a popular choice. In Alberta, Blackjack First Person by Evolution is one of the most played variants. An RNG version of their Live Casino Blackjack, it's an 8 deck single player game with a theoretical RTP of 99.29%. Blackjack First Person boasts 3D graphics and comes with a unique ‘GO LIVE’ button. This takes you through an in-game portal, transporting you to the live version of the game.
💡 Editor's tip: Many Blackjack variants in Alberta will offer a range of side bets. Whilst these offer extra payouts, the RTP rates are much lower. For instance, Blackjack First Person offers a Perfect Pairs side bet. The RTP for the side bet is 95.90%. Always read the paytable carefully to understand your chances.
⚖️ House edge: From 1.5%
Roulette
Learn more about online rouletteMany Alberta casino fans enjoy online roulette for its various betting options, adding to the game's excitement. One of the most popular titles is Lightning Roulette by Evolution. This title offers European roulette gameplay, with added prizes. On each spin of the wheel, up to five Lucky Numbers can be struck by lightning, giving them multiplied payouts of between 50x and 500x.
💡 Editor's tip: Most AB casinos will offer both European and American roulette. I recommend playing European roulette as the house edge is limited to 2.7%, as opposed to 5.26% for American roulette.
⚖️ House edge: From 1.5%
Keno
Explore keno casinosKeno is a lottery-style game where you pick numbers to try and win. It's hugely popular because it's easy to play and fast-paced. Not all online casinos in Alberta offer keno, however.
Our favourite Alberta casino for keno is LuckyWins Casino. It offers 14 keno games with different themes. Candy Crush fans will enjoy Sweet Keno whilst slots players might want to try Age of the Gods: Keno by Playtech. Based on the infamous jackpot slot of the same name, it offers familiar ancient Greek graphics.
⚖️ House edge: From 5% to 15%
Video poker
Find video poker casinosUnfortunately, Alberta does not offer regulated poker rooms. This means you can't play at legal tournaments online. That said, you can still enjoy video poker. Video poker is a version of the game played against the computer. The cards are drawn via a Random Number Generator (RNG) so you can be sure the game is fair.
Video poker is popular in Alberta, but most casinos only offer a handful of titles. Jacks or Better is a common variant. The game is similar to five-card draw poker, though the lowest paying hand includes a pair of jacks. Jacks or Better can have an RTP of between 90% and 97%.
💡 Editor's tip: Just like slots and blackjack, it's important to read the paytable when playing video poker. Different variants have different rules and gameplay might not be the same as you're used to in real life.
⚖️ House edge: From 5% and 0.5%
Live casino
Play at the best live casinosAlthough Alberta is home to 24 land-based casinos, sometimes you can't beat the convenience of live dealer games. Played via video stream, these games emulate the thrill of the casino from the comfort of your own home.
All of our top casinos offer live dealer games and you can expect to find live versions of roulette, blackjack, poker, baccarat, and even gameshows. Lucky Ones Casino is our favourite site for these games, however, as there are 200+ titles to choose from.
⚖️ House edge: Depends on the game

PlayAlberta is the only regulated sportsbook in the province. However, much like casinos, you can bet at offshore sports betting sites too.
